As is traditional for high-quality banjos, the instrument is shipped with the bridge unseated to protect the head during transport. Placing it is a simple, one-time operation that is part of the authentic experience:
1. Measure the distance from the nut to the 12th fret.
2. Mark the same distance on the head, starting from the 12th fret. That's where you'll place the bridge.
3. Tune up and check the intonation at the 12th fret: if the fretted note is sharp, move the bridge slightly backward; if it's flat, move it slightly forward.
